Abstract

Arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, systemic autoimmune disease characterized by pain, swelling and stiffness. Inflammatory diseases including different types of rheumatic diseases are a major and world wide problem. Gastrointestinal side effect is the major problem associated with the presently available non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. Now a day’s world population moves towards herbal remedies for treatment of such ailments. The uses of herbal medicine are becoming popular due to toxicity and side effects of allopathic medicines. Medicinal plants play an important role in the development of potent therapeutic agents. The number of plants and their chemical compounds has been screened for their anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity, but only few of them reached up to the clinical level. In this review an attempt has been done to highlight the work on indigenous medicinal plants and its bioactive compounds mechanism having Anti-arthritic potential.
